30 year old Dustin Glen Shelton of Paris, has been identified as the victim of the disturbance and shooting that occurred at 485 SE 14th street Thursday morning. Shelton was pronounced dead this morning at Paris Regional Medical Center after he was transported there with an apparent gunshot wound. The other person that was transported with the gunshot victim was treated and released. The case remains under investigation by Paris police.
Mt Pleasant Police Luck Out On BurglaryMt Pleasant’s police Tuesday evening were dispatched to a car burglary in progress at Pilgrim’s Pride Plant. Officers found that the suspect had already fled on foot. They checked out a bicycle in the area and noted a piece of clothing tied to the bike and a wallet containing an ID. An address led them to an outbuilding on the property where they found the 44-year-old suspect. They found the stolen property with the suspect.
Starting Wednesday Brian Troy Pays His DebtBrian Troy, 42, of Keller, forged signatures, illegally moved funds and created phony documents concerning Texarkana College employee retirement accounts. He will now pay that back by starting a five-year prison sentence next Wednesday. Troy pleaded guilty to 59 felonies last week for his misconduct as a financial adviser for the employee Optional Retirement Plans at Texarkana College and Dallas Community College System.
Dad Kicks Family Out Of BoatJonathan Rayburn, 46, of Fouke AR, is facing criminal charges. He reportedly abandoned his family on the Red River. That included his seven-year-old son who recently had a kidney transplant. He allegedly forced his family from their aluminum boat as they were on the river last Sunday night. The wife, Misty Rayburn, called Miller County Sheriff’s Department. She called after the family had been rescued by a farmer who heard their cries for help. Troopers Prepare For Labor DayEnhanced traffic enforcement for the long Labor Day weekend begins tomorrow at 6:00 and runs through midnight Monday. All state troopers will be out in force, focusing on drunk drivers, speeders and those not properly restrained in seatbelts or child safety seats.
August Heat Not Record BreakingDespite what seemed like constant oppressive heat, August turned out to be only the seventh hottest in North Texas records. Based on numbers from the National Weather Service, three of the seven hottest Augusts were in the 1940s and early 50s while the other four have been since 1999. Last month we had 22 days with triple-digit highs. Some areas recorded highs as hot as 110.
HCMH To Buy Sulphur Springs ClinicHopkins County Memorial hospital will buy the Medical-Surgical Clinic in Sulphur Springs. The purchase will add nine new physicians as well as several nurse practitioners and physician assistants to the hospital staff. Closing on the sale is set for September 30.
SSISD To Dismiss EarlyAll Sulphur Springs ISD campuses will dismiss one hour early today. It will provide ample time for buses to run their regular routes and provide transportation to the football game in Garland tonight. Bus drivers will be delivering all regular route students to their homes an hour earlier than usual.
TEA Cuts To Hurt Book PurchasesWith a total reduction of nearly $262 million in the Texas Education Agency budget for the next two years, the largest cut may be to textbooks. $48 million is proposed to be cut by not getting new English and spelling textbooks and handwriting materials. Also on the proposed reduction list are $22 million for teacher merit pay and $35 million for new science labs.
Area Red Cross On AlertSome area Red Cross volunteers and vehicles are on alert. It is in case they're needed in the wake of Hurricane Earl and the approach of Hurricane Fiona. As of now they have not been activated. National Red Cross is reluctant to pull resources from hurricane prone states during hurricane season. They often try to first activate resources from states not likely to be directly affected during the season.
Texas Soldier Dies In AfghanistanA Texan was among five soldiers killed in Afghanistan. 30-year-old Staff Sgt. Jesse Infante of Cypress died of injuries he received when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.
East Texas Singer Makes HistoryMiranda Lambert of Lindale has made CMA Awards history with a nine nominations. That's the most ever by a female artist. Lady A earned the second most nominations with five and Lambert’s fiancé Blake Shelton was next with four, tied with Zac Brown Band.
Congresswoman Repays Scholarship FundA North Texas congresswoman broke scholarship rules by awarding money to at least relatives and an aide's children. She now has repaid about $31,000 to the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation. Democratic Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson said in a statement that she has repaid the funds in full.
Dove Hunters Urged To Be Cautious About Wildfire DangerMuch of Texas is still hot and dry and wildfires are continuing to spark up across the state. Texas Parks and Wildlife is asking dove hunters to be especially careful when heading out this week for the season. Fire activity remains steady throughout much of the state, which means a wildfire could be easily ignited. All it takes is one spark from an unattended campfire, lit cigarette or even the muzzle of a gun.
Two HS Football Powerhouses Under InvestigationAn investigation by a Dallas TV station into alleged improper coaching at Euless Trinity and Southlake Carroll high schools has caught the attention of the UIL. UIL rules prohibit skill instruction during the summer but coaches were videotaped in June at a 7-on-7 football game giving a continuous stream of what appeared to be coaching commands. UIL rules mandate that coaches cannot arrange 7-on-7 scrimmages or competitions between their teams.
Accused Murder Suspect Posts BailAn East Texas man accused of shooting a man to death over a love interest has been released on bond. Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor said the incident that left 27-year-old Jacob Kennedy dead occurred over the weekend near Elkhart. 35-year-old Larry Warren of Palestine was arrested and charged with murder following the shooting.
Texas Tuition Promise Fund Back In ActionWednesday marked the beginning of Texas families' opportunity to lock-in the cost of tuition. The Texas Tuition Promise Fund allows families to prepay for a four-year degree, or just a few classes or semesters at Texas public colleges and universities. Families can choose from three different units based on the type of Texas school they are saving for. Families can buy up to six years of undergraduate education.
Illegal Immigration Appears To Be DownAn independent research group today has reports that the number of illegal immigrants in the U.S. has dropped for the first time in 20 years. The review finds that substantially fewer undocumented workers from Mexico, Latin America and elsewhere are crossing the border in search of jobs. States with the highest percentage of illegal immigrants were California (6.9%), Nevada (6.8%), Texas (6.5%) and Arizona (5.8%).
Utilities May Get Help With Deadbeat CustomersElectric companies stuck after deadbeat customers make it their practice to rack up bills, then switch to a new provider and leave the old bill unpaid could get help from the Texas Public Utility Commission. The PUC this month is scheduled to consider preventing some nonpaying customers from switching providers until they pay their previous utility debt.
Human Error Causes Gas ExplosionThe Texas Railroad Commission says a company didn’t adequately mark the path of a buried natural gas pipeline that exploded after it was hit by a drill. The massive June 7 explosion in rural Johnson County killed a worker. The commission says Enterprise Products Operating violated several state regulations.
Judge Approves Settlement In Peanut PoisoningA federal judge has approved a $12 million settlement for those sickened or killed in last year’s salmonella outbreak tied to a peanut processor. The outbreak was traced to Peanut Corp. of America’s plants in Texas and Georgia and linked to at least nine deaths and 700 illnesses.
VZ County Aggravated Assault ArestVan Zandt County deputies were dispatched to a shooting on VZCR #2807 in Mabank Thursday shortly after noon. Upon arrival deputies determined that two (2) males had been involved in an altercation. The preliminary investigation revealed that one of the subjects involved had been reported as a suspect in a burglary of a habitation earlier in the evening, in which firearms were stolen.
